Emley West Yorkshire
Emley is a small village in West Yorkshire, England between Huddersfield and Wakefield with a population of 1,867 according to the 2001 census.
It is 7 km (4.5 miles) east of Huddersfield and 8 km (5 miles) west of Wakefield. The village lies in moorland close to the Emley Moor TV Transmitter. Emley dates from Anglo-Saxon times.
Emley Moor colliery closed in 1985 after a year-long miners' strike, and is now a business park.
Emley has three pubs: "The White Horse", "The Green Dragon", and "The Wentworth" and a stone cross in the centre of the village. There is also a grocery/newsagents, and a post-office.
In line with Yorkshire tradition, there is a brass band in the village - Emley Brass Band, who rehearse twice a week in the village bandroom.
Emley is the home of AFC Emley non-league football club. The original village team, Emley A.F.C., made national headlines in the 1997/98 season when they progressed to the 3rd round of the FA Cup, beating Morecambe and Lincoln City in the first and second rounds. They lost in the third round, 2-1, to West Ham United.
The team then moved to Wakefield in 2001, where they were known as "Wakefield-Emley F.C.". In 2005 the club split and new club AFC Emley play the village's Welfare Ground.
Emley is home to Emley Clarence Cricket Club, nicknamed "The Clarence", who play in the Drakes Huddersfield League.
